Arctic Adventures with Raymond
If you haven't met Raymond, he’s the warm-hearted north-Norwegian with a story ready to share. You’ll find him in a cozy corner in our restaurant ATTME or maybe traveling the world to put Wood on the map. His easy and inviting presence drawing people in like a crackling fire on a winter’s night.
We stole a few moments with Raymond to gather his top recommendations just steps from our lobby.
Raymond, what’s the philosophy behind the outdoor experiences at Wood Hotel Bodø?
Nature is what the Arctic is best known for. And if there’s one thing Norwegians love to talk about, it’s the weather. For us, nature is not just a backdrop—it’s a part of who we are. From childhood, we learn to “go on hikes” and to respect the wilderness.
Wood Hotel is built with deep respect for what nature provides, and we take pride in sharing our culture with guests—whether that means a peaceful walk in the forest or pushing your limits with extreme outdoor adventures.
Give us your elevator pitch for why Wood Hotel Bodø is the ultimate Arctic escape.
Remote, yet accessible—nestled north of the Arctic Circle, with breathtaking views of towering mountains, deep fjords, and endless forests. And the best part? You’re only 15 minutes from the airport. That means you spend less time traveling and more time experiencing the wild.
Here, Northern Norwegian hospitality greets you the moment you walk through the door.
If you were designing the perfect Arctic day for a first-time visitor, what would it include?
The ‘Sure Thing’ Itinerary: A guaranteed unforgettable experience
- A RIB boat tour to Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest tidal current. Get up close to nature’s raw power, witness the forces shaping the Earth, and spot the mighty sea eagle soaring above.
- A hike to Keiservarden, one of Bodø’s most beloved peaks. Hiking is at the heart of Norwegian life, and this trail, starting right from Wood Hotel, is a must. Imagine reaching the summit under the golden glow of the midnight sun.
- A visit to Kjerringøy Trading Post, where you step back in time and learn how fishing and trade shaped life in the North.
The ‘Adventurous’ Itinerary: For those who crave the unexpected
- A guided glacier hike on Svartisen, where the icy landscape feels like another world.
- Rampen Via Ferrata, an adrenaline-pumping climb with jaw-dropping views.
- Dog sledding—a high-speed, unforgettable Arctic tradition.
- Rafting in Saltstraumen, where the currents test your courage.
What’s your personal favorite way to experience the Arctic wilderness?
A crackling fire under the open sky. There’s something primal about feeling the warmth, grilling a sausage, and brewing a strong cup of coffee over the flames. The smell of burning wood lingers in your clothes, the flickering light dances across the trees—it’s a simple but powerful connection to nature.
And nothing beats drinking fresh mountain water straight from a stream. Pure, ice-cold, and untouched.
We know you love hiking. What’s your favorite trail, and why?
My ultimate hike is “Bodøryggen på langs”—a beautiful adventure.
The journey starts with a brutal ascent up Skaugtua, but the reward is immediate: the Lofoten Wall stretching across the horizon, your companion for the entire trek. From Skaugtua, the trail winds through rolling mountain ridges, offering a stunning mix of rugged landscapes and panoramic views.
It’s a demanding but rewarding hike—almost 20 km (12 miles) and 6-8 hours of walking. And the best part? You finish right at Wood Hotel, where a hot sauna awaits as your well-earned prize.
For those who might be hesitant about Arctic adventures, what’s the one experience that will make them fall in love with it?
The light and the people.
From the mystical glow of the winter sky to the endless golden hours of summer’s midnight sun, the Arctic is full of ever-changing light. Combine that with the warmth of Northern Norwegian hospitality, and even the most hesitant adventurer will feel at home.
What’s a hidden gem near Wood Hotel that guests often overlook?
Ramnfloget.
A spectacular viewpoint just a short trip from the hotel, yet rarely visited. Here, you’ll often find yourself completely alone, gazing out over Bodø from a breathtaking vantage point. It’s the perfect place to pause, reflect, and take in the beauty of the Arctic wilderness.
Lastly, what’s your top tip for making the most of an Arctic adventure?
Do as the locals do—check the weather!
The Arctic is unpredictable, and adjustment is key. Be ready to change your plans based on the elements. And don’t hesitate to ask locals for advice—we love sharing our best-kept secrets!
Gear matters. Waterproof and windproof layers are essential, and good shoes are a must. Staying dry is the key to staying comfortable.
But most importantly, be present. Let nature set the pace, embrace the unexpected, and let the Arctic take your breath away.
And after a long day outside? Eat like a Norwegian. Our cuisine is deeply tied to the sea, with fish playing a central role. Halibut is a special-occasion favorite—and we think you should treat yourself, too.
